The Merits of Mahadana

There are the rare opportunities, human being is given the chances to offer a great offering - Mahadana.

As a practitioner, there are various conducts that support directly the arrival to prosperity in practice.

Buddha mentioned the vijja and the carana are both necessary for the well-being of a human, and for a practitioner especially, to arrive at the ultimate freedom of suffering without much disturbance.

Vijja - The clearness and freedom from blindfolding.
It is a paramit obtained by frequent questions to great teachers, and oneself during practising. One who possesses a certain amount of vijja will have a certain amount of merits. The merits including:
1. Always able to meet with holy teachers or wise men in daily life.
2. When arriving at a monastery, the teacher's teaching always suitable for him/her.
3. When in need, always great wise men will appear to provide helps to him/her.
4. Any quest arises in his/her mind will be answered with great wiseness.

And many more merits.

Carana - There are three caranas, 1. Dana 2. Sila 3. Samadhi.

Carana is paramit obtained by frequent practising of dana (offering), of sila (boundaries setting) and of samadhi (meditation).

Those who obtained a certain amount of carana will have a certain amount of merits.

The merits including:
1. Welcomed by many in the daily life.
2. Having hospitality whenever he/she goes.
3. Healthy and well being always.
4. Sleep well.
5. Free from danger, enmity and sickness.
6. Comfort in relationships with oneself and others.
7. Well sleep and well wake up.

and many more merits.

.............................................

How about those who practice only carana and not vijja?
They will arrive at a very hospitable place and not able to learn from any teacher, either because the teaching is too profound for them, or they felt asleep during the teaching, or the teacher just left before they arrived, or the teacher stopped teaching the moment they arrived etc. Due to the absence of the merits of vijja, they will not be able to enlighten even they practice ardently for a long time.

How about those who practice only vijja and not carana?
They will arrive at a very learned teacher, and cannot receive hospitably welcoming or staying, have great challenges with the requisites such as food, dwelling, body well-being (get sickness easily) or transportation. They will be able to learn from the teacher but the condition to be there will be taken away from them very soon or hostility will be there wherever they go.

.............................................

Thus to prosper in practice, we need both vijja and carana practice.

Mahadana offers both the opportunities to do great vijja and carana practice. Due to these practices, in the present, in the future, the merits will bring a great result. The merits of Mahadana also purifying the passed mispractice in any lives.

May all be joyous for the Mahadana, be part of it, be rejoice to it! May all good wishes of us come true! May all attain Nibbana in this very life!
